The man in gray pondered, fidgeting with his sword as he sat on a tree branch deep in the early morning woods.
He was a slender man, dressed in gray with a cape, sword and mask, and could be considered handsome were he not so utterly confused. I say confused because he is not evil, just misguided in his ways, though he has not yet realized this. His name is Neirad, created in an as yet unknown way from Darien, otherwise known as Tuxedo Mask, friend of the Sailor Scouts.
I need a weapon he thought to himself. There has to be something...
Just then, a deafening explosion shattered the stillness of the morning violently.
As Neirad looked around, he saw a ring of flames within a few hundred yards of his tree. He rose with but a thought, floating softly to the ground and walking to the disturbance, curiosity peaking in his mind.
He walked to the raging fire surrounding three crater without fear of pain, after all, when one is almost pure energy, one is hard to hurt with anything solid. After he transcended the inferno, he floated down into the pit toward a sphere shaped object, dented slightly and dirty from the impact, but otherwise unharmed.
Hmmmmm. he mused What have we here?
"Step away from the pod!" a strange voice said from behind him, and as he turned, he saw a strange man dressed in orange, floating above him.
He was slender, and in very good shape, though his hair was spiky and black, Neirad guessed he was no mere 'punk'.
"Did you hear me?" the man said, landing softly
"I heard you, boy" Neirad countered, smiling.
"Boy?" the man asked, confused "My name is Goku, and I said..."
"I know what you said, boy." Neirad interrupted quickly. "Why is this pod so important to you anyway?"
"There is a wealth of information from my home planet in that pod, none of your concern."
"Indeed." Neirad mused. "I didn't place you as a Human."
"You can read power levels without a scouter?" Goku replied quickly, visibly tensing to Neirad's exceptional eyesight.
"Indeed" he lied. "And I will enjoy reading your history, perhaps I can learn something in there that I can use for my own ends."
And, before Goku could even reply, a Black Hole opened beneath Neirad's feet and grew big enough to take both him and the pod away to places unknown, leaving the Earth raised Saya-jin staring in awe.
Two weeks after this incident, deep in the reaches of the Negaverse, Queen Beryl stared into a crystal ball as her Generals waited for the newest member of their group, a man named Neirad.
"Where is he?" Zoycite asked, her patience wearing thin.
A black hole appeared, Neirad slowly lifting out of it, smiling as he often did.
"Finally!" Malachyte exclaimed, visibly annoyed.
"Don't worry Malachyte, I'm not staying long." Neirad said, a strange new tint to his voice was noticed by everyone in attendance.
"What have you to report Neirad?" Beryl's voice boomed over everyone.
"I have come to report my leaving, Beryl"
"You DARE address me in that tone?" Beryl stood, scowling.
"Why, I believe I do!" Neirad smiled. "And you should be happy that I don't take you from your throne before I go, I'm doing you a favor."
"And where is the Alien pod?" Beryl asked, only slightly amused. It had been a long time since anyone stood against her in such a manner.
"Safe, in my workshop." Neirad said. "Now, if you will excuse me, I have things to attend to."
"I think not!" Zoycite said, nearly screaming at Neirad. "You don't leave until Queen Beryl tells you you may leave!"
"Back off Zoycite, I wouldn't want to hurt one as pretty as you."
"Flattery will get you nowhere... ZOI!" she screamed the last as she shot a bolt of fire at Neirad, who simply knocked it aside as he would swat a pestering fly.
"Impossible!" Zoycite exclaimed. "Your power is NO match for mine!"
"It would seem you are mistaken Zoycite"
By now, even Queen Beryl stood in awe of Neirad's newfound power.
"The Time Portal!" she said, realization sinking in at long last.
"The Saya-jin race is..." Neirad cleared his throat "Excuse me, WAS a great people indeed, and now that such power is in my hands, it will soon be my place to destroy the Sailor Scouts in my own manner, but first, I have other manners to attend, like wiping out the last few remaining members of the Saya-jin race!"
"You will NOT destroy the Sailor Scouts! Not when it is me who created you..."
Neirad was gone before he heard the rest, but he knew how it would sound, and he was glad to never have to hear it again. He would deal with the Negaverse in time as well, but all things come in their place... First, he had to find this 'Goku' person and 'bargain' with him. Just the thought of the conflict to come drew a smile wide across his slender face, and he couldn't help but laugh as he transferred between dimensions.
Meanwhile, Amy sat on a bench in the park, pecking away at the portable computer on her lap, frowning every few minutes or so.
She was trying to write a fictional story, but having more than her fair share of trouble. History reports, Math tests, Science projects... none of these ever bothered her, but fiction...
"Oh geez..." she said, frustrated, reaching for the backspace once again key. "I'll never get this."
"Get what?" the voice said behind her, making her jump slightly and drop her laptop.
Before it could hit the ground, a blur appeared at her feet and instantly became a man with black, spiky hair wearing an orange outfit.
Amy was in shock. "How... who...?"
Goku laughed, handing her back her laptop. "My name's Goku, I'm kinda new around here."
"Um... I'm Amy... but..."
"Where I come from most everyone is that fast, sorry, I didn't mean to scare you like that."
As he stood, Amy noticed how incredibly muscled he was. "You said you were new, where are you from?"
"Well, That's a long story..."
"I have time, this story isn't due until next week anyway." Amy smiled "Besides, with the school under renovations, I have nowhere to go right now."
"OK, OK." Goku said, sitting down next to Amy "Maybe you can help me, you see, I'm looking for someone... actually a few someone's... actually..."
"Start from the beginning, and I'll see what I can do." Amy said, closing up her laptop and setting it beside her.
"He wants you, Sailor Mercury!" Neirad's unforgettable voice boomed from behind the two.
"You!" Goku exclaimed, back flipping over the bench and landing on his feet facing the intruder. "Where's the pod?"
"If you want it that bad you can have it, I'm done with it." Neirad said, opening a black hole between himself and Goku instantly, a split second later, the pod shot out of it like a cannon, hurling Goku into the center of the park , the pod landing atop him with a crash and a cloud of dust.
Amy meanwhile had transformed into Sailor Mercury and was about to use her bubbles to smoke screen the area before Neirad could continue the attack, but he was nowhere to be found.
"Goku?" Mercury yelled as she ran toward the pod. She noted thankfully that the people in the park had since scattered, leaving the two heroes alone with their problems.
As she neared the pod, it suddenly lifted and Goku, on his knees, slowly lifted it and set it to the side, beginning to dust himself off as if nothing had hit other than a wind gust.
"Are you OK?" she asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, I'm fiiiiiiiii........." Goku turned, suddenly staring at Amy's sudden transformation.
Mercury giggled. "We're not so weak around here either."
After a few cups of cocoa, and a few dozen rice bowls for Goku, The group, consisting of Goku, Amy, Rei, Serena, Meena, Lita, Darien and another man with spiky hair calling himself Vegeta.
"So you and Vegeta are from another dimension?" Darien said after a long silence.
"What are you dense?" Vegeta piped in. "That's what Kakkarot said the last two times!" he scowled "Are you Earth people stupid in every dimension?"
"Calm down Vegeta." Goku said. "It is a lot to take in, I mean if someone came into our dimension saying they were super powerful and wanted our help, what would say?"
"I'd tell them they were insignificant specks and they should be gone, now come on Kakkarot, we're wasting time."
"You lost your scouter, and we can't track these kinds of power levels without some help, so where do you suppose we look?"
"Anywhere but here." Vegeta said. "We only have 2 days left!"
"I know that Vegeta, now would you relax?"
"We'll help you one one condition." Amy said suddenly, breaking up what she figured would be a fight, and from what she had seen from Goku, Vegeta was probably nearly his equal, and that wouldn't get anyone anywhere.
"Name it." Vegeta said, growing restless.
Amy walked over to Goku and whispered something in his ear.
He pondered a moment, and looked at Amy before exploding into fits of laughter and nearly falling off the steps.
"That's it?" Goku said after catching his breath.
"Yes, unconditional terms."
"You got it!" Goku replied.
"Good." Amy said. "Now, we should get ready for the fight to come."
"Those are the first words I've heard that make sense so far." Vegeta replied, smiling evilly. "I want to meet this 'Neirad' who thinks he can steal the ancient secrets of the Saya-jin race for his own benefit. Kakkarot may have gotten mixed up when he was little, but even he knows the pride of the Saya-jin race, and that's the only reason we are here."
"Don't worry Vegeta, you'll get your fight when this is done." Goku said, standing. "But right now, we do have to get ready... this will be a tough fight, even for the two of us."
"Nonsense." Vegeta said. "You forget who you are, you are a Saya-jin. Nothing can stand against our might."
"And besides," Serena said, her first words all day. "You've got the Sailor Scouts to back you up, what could go wrong?"
The next day brought a beautiful sunrise, along with new apprehensions among the group of heroes as they waited for the fight they all new approached. As the girls slept, three men found themselves on a cliff overlooking a clearing far from anywhere.
Serena tossed in her sleep, mumbling softly, and Darien smiled as he sat on the cliff edge, thinking of better times. As Vegeta floated behind him, looking off into the horizon, he noticed the smile on Darien's face, and cocked a single eyebrow in confusion.
"Here we sit, waiting for a fight with an opponent neither of us know too well, knowing we may not have much of a chance, and yet you smile over a girl who sleeps while we stand guard?" Vegeta mused aloud.
"Love is a funny thing." Darien said softly, the smile widening across his face. "If I knew I would die tomorrow, or even if I knew I would die in a few hours, I'd be sitting here smiling anyway."
"You humans are strange indeed." Vegeta said, a slight smile crossing his face as well. "If you spent as much time caring for yourselves and less looking after your weaker members, your race could get quite powerful."
"Power isn't everything Vegeta" Goku replied from behind them, setting down an armload of firewood and tossing a couple of pieces on the fire. "Besides, caring and love is what makes us what we are."
"You say 'us' Kakkarot.." Vegeta paused "I often forget you were raised on this primitive planet and you think like humans do."
"I too know how it feels to love Vegeta, I miss Gohan and Chi-Chi a lot, but I have responsibilities to do what I can for the planet."
"You're married?" Amy's soft voice breathed through a yawn "I didn't know." she said, almost sounding let down.
"Yup, Chi-Chi's the best, and my son, Gohan, you'd like him."
Vegeta said nothing, but continued staring off into the new day with a little more on his mind than he would have liked.
Amy woke Lita and the two started cooking breakfast for the hungry heroes. After breakfast, the waiting started anew, with Darien becoming Tuxedo Mask and the girls becoming the Sailor Scouts. As they watched and waited, Sailor Venus wondered aloud.
"I thought you destroyed Neirad though Sailor Moon."
Jupiter frowned "You know these Nega-freaks, they never seem to stay gone long."
"Too true." Mercury said, remembering the last time they met Darien's evil twin.
Vegeta perked up, floating again, looking toward the East.
"Hmmmm."
"What is it Vegeta?" Goku said, looking that direction as well.
"Maybe nothing, not a very big power, probably not him."
"Let's not take chances" Tuxedo Mask said, looking back to the Scouts "You all know what to do, right?"
"Right!" they replied in unison, leaping down to the clearing and forming a circle, facing outward. Each Scout faced a direction and Sailor Moon stood in the middle, holding her Crescent Moon Wand to her chest.
Vegeta smiled "They're brave, I'll give them that."
"You're getting attached Vegeta." Goku replied, smiling.
"Ha! You're dreaming Kakkarot." He replied, turning and floating off to the other side of the ring of Sailor Scouts.
"You enjoy that, don't you?" Tuxedo Mask said, smiling himself.
"You bet." Goku said. "He may be a tough cookie, but even he has a heart."
Vegeta pointed and Goku looked East, seeing the gray energy ball surrounding the incoming Neirad, flying as fast as a young Namek at least.
As Tuxedo Mask took his position, Goku flew into place, muttering "Too bad, doesn't look like it'll be much of a fight, but there's no telling, I gotta keep on my guard."
"Indeed you do, Saya-jin!" Neirad said, coming to a stop in mid air in front of Goku, smiling his evil smile. "I know all about you, your planet and your techniques... you have no chance against me."
"Ha!" Vegeta cackled floating next to Goku also. "You know nothing human, go away before you see the true power of the Saya-jin race."
"Vegeta." Neirad sneered. "One the Saya-jin elite... what a let down, and here I thought I'd get a decent fight."
"I've had enough of your babble" Vegeta retorted "Shall I go first, or would you like the honor of wiping this useless speck of insolence out of existence Kakkarot?"
Goku smiled "You go first Vegeta, I wouldn't want to hurt him."
Neirad scowled "Feel my power!"
As he unleashed his energy blast, a feeling of power overwhelmed him, and for once in his existence he knew happiness. Soon, the roar died and the smoke cleared and the two Saya-jin stood tall, not even phased with his most powerful blast."
"Impossible!" he screamed, powering up for another blast.
Vegeta began to laugh, an evil laugh, but one of pure amusement.
"If that's all the power you have, fool, you are sadly no match for us, much less a random forest creature!"
Again Neirad's blast deafened the countryside... and again, as the smoke cleared, the two Saya-jin floated in midair, not even smudged.
Neirad dropped a few feet in altitude, visibly drained, and now slightly transparent.
Goku blinked in confusion, visibly lost. Vegeta as well was confused, but only stopped laughing to stare.
"All the training..." Neirad breathed, exhausted "The studying... the history... nothing."
Goku floated toward the man in gray, knowing he was no longer a threat.
"Power isn't everything Neirad." Goku said, placing a hand on his shoulder.
Neirad shrugged it off, becoming solid again and regaining strength through anger.
"Power is EVERYTHING!" he screamed, powering up in a shower of silver sparks
Goku floated back, getting ready for another shot.
"Goku!" Mercury yelled from below "He's negative energy... you have to..."
She was cut off by the biggest blast yet, and this one hurt, knocking Goku to the ground and Vegeta backward a few hundred feet.
"Negative energy." Goku mumbled, getting up slowly ad Neirad appeared in front of him, landing a flurry of punches with lightning speed.
Goku soon found an opening in the barrage and began a barrage of his own.
As the fight ensued, Vegeta landed next to the confused Sailor Scouts, who were scanning the area for the fighting.
"They are moving faster than you can see." Vegeta said, seeing the confusion on their faces. "Stop focusing on them and feel with your soul, you'll see what can't be seen."
As the Scouts focused, Sailor Moon smiled, raising her wand.
"Moon Healing... Activation!"
The energy from the wand seemed to not have an effect, but soon, shapes were visible in the rainbow-like mist of the positive energy field, and the scouts soon saw Goku getting the upper hand in the fight.
Goku was doing everything he could to hold Neirad off, and seeing an opening, he ducked under a punch, slipped to the side of the Negaverse General and landed a punch in his kidney that sent him sprawling. Not hesitating, he appeared behind the flying Neirad, knocking him to the ground and landing atop him with a punch to the gut, knocking the wind out of him.
"He's done it!" Mercury yelled. "Tuxedo Mask! Do it now!"
But it wasn't Tuxedo Mask who appeared from behind a rock, it was plain old Darien.
He walked to Goku and after helping him up, moved him aside. He knelt down next to Neirad, smiling.
"What is he, nuts?" Vegeta asked, stepping forward to finish Neirad off, and Darien too if he tried anything funny like changing sides, but Goku stopped him as he walked up, shaking his head silently.
"They need to talk Vegeta. Let it go, it's over." without another word, he collapsed to a siting position on the ground, tired and scuffed, but otherwise OK.
"You and your compassion Kakkarot... one day, it may get you killed." Vegeta huffed, turning his back on the group, watching the rainbow haze dissipate over the clearing.
"Maybe Vegeta" Goku said, smiling "But I'll die doing what's right."
"Bah!" Vegeta snapped, but said no more.
That evening, the Scouts had all since left except for Amy, who sat with Darien, Goku, Vegeta and Neirad, who had been in a slump since his loss earlier that day.
"This is pointless, tell us where the portal is, gray boy!" Vegeta sneered at Neirad, who still wasn't moving or even responding to anything or anyone.
"He's not gonna tell us Vegeta." Goku said, standing and stretching. "We're gonna have to look ourselves."
"Maybe not." Amy said, fumbling with her laptop. "Tell me about this portal."
Vegeta growled and turned his back again, floating off to a stand of trees nearby.
As Goku began to tell Amy about the portal, Neirad looked at Darien, who stared into the setting sun.
"Darien." he said, his voice raspy and dry "I understand now."
"Good." Darien said, smiling. "I guess it's time then."
"Yes." Neirad agreed "but first..." he stood slowly, turning to Goku, who stood in awe, ready for anything.
"I... I'm sorry." he said. "I had no right to steal your history..."
"Hey, no sweat!" Goku said, catching on. "I'm just glad it's not forgotten history, in fact, there's something you can do for me..."
"Name it." Neirad said "I owe you that much."
Amy stood in front of the class, finishing her story.
"...and with a last, final breath, the man lay still, disappearing into history as he appeared, forgotten... alone."
"Wow Amy, that was fantastic." her teacher said, smiling. "That almost made me cry."
Amy just smiled weakly, handing in her paper and walking back to her desk, stifling back tears.
"Touching." Vegeta said, smiling. "Can we go now Kakkarot?"
From outside the school, Goku laughed.
"Yeah Vegeta, let's go."
"Indeed." The third man said, now adorned in gray Saya-jin armor. He kept the mask and sword, though now his cape was shorter for fighting and his hair longer from training, Neirad floated just behind the two Saya-jin warriors as he opened the portal to their home dimension, and his new home.
